The West Virginia Pinewood Derby State Championship Rules & Regulations

Introduction:
The West Virginia Pinewood Derby State Championship is hosted by Cub Scout Pack 39 and Boy Scout Troop 40 of Bridgeport, West Virginia and members of the Allohak Council. The primary purpose of hosting this State Championship is to showcase scouting as a family activity. The State Derby is designed to be a fun-filled family activity.
The State Derby is open to all scouts. Racers DO NOT have to be the winner of any Pack, Den or District race to participate in the State Derby.
Participation in Cub Scout Championships:
Any Cub Scout registered and in good standing with any Council, Den or Pack located within the State of West Virginia or any council that includes area in West Virginia is eligible and invited to participate in the West Virginia Pinewood Derby State Championship.
There is no requirement that a Cub Scout has to be the winner of any local, Den, Pack, District or Regional Derby Race to participate for the State Championship.
Racers DO NOT have to be West Virginia residents as long as they are a member in good standing of any Pack or Troop associated with any Council that includes West Virginia.
Participation in the State Championship Divisions:
The West Virginia State Pinewood Derby Championships will consist of ten (10) separate and distinct Divisions. There will be nine (9) separate Championship races with nine (9) separate Championship winners recognized.
The following Cub Scout Divisions** and Registration Fees have been approved:
• Webelo I and Webelo II Division - $10
• Bear Division - $10
• Wolf Division - $10
• Tiger Division - $10
At this time, there is one Division for all Brownies and Girls Scouts:
• Girl Scout/Brownie Division** - $10
**The Webelo I & II, Bear, Wolf, Tiger and Girl Scout/Brownie Divisions must adhered to the official rules regarding the construction of a Pinewood Derby car.
Participation in Non-Scout Divisions:
The following Non-Cub Scout Divisions & Registration Fees have been approved:
• Mom's & Sisters Division - $10
• Dad's Division - $10
• Boy Scout Division $10
The Mom's & Sisters, Dad's and Boy Scout Divisions are in the ANYTHING GOES category. Cars must only comply with the length, width and height requirements only. See Rules Below.
The top twelve (12) finishers in each of Division will be recognized and awarded trophies.
Registration for All Racers
Registration for racers will be accepted up to the time the race begins.
Upon registration, every racer in the Cub Scout Divisions, the Boy Scout Division and the Girl Scout/Brownie Division will be awarded a complimentary limited edition State Championship t-shirt on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority will be given to those racers who sign up prior to race weekend by mailing their registration to "State Pinewood Derby Championship, P.O. Box 907, Clarksburg, WV 26302" at least ten days prior to the race. Registration forms are available on this website.

Type of Race:
Each Championship Race in all Divisions will be a double-elimination race. Once racers are registered and check their car in, that car will remain inside the race area. Cars taken out of the race area must be recertified by the official judge at that Track.
After registration is complete, all racers will be randomly selected (computer-generated) for the race bracket.
Rules for Cub Scout & Girl Scout/Brownie Divisions:
All racers in the Cub Scout Divisions as well as Girl Scout and Brownie Division must comply with the rules and regulations set forth below including the size, weight, length and requirements set forth for body styles, axles and wheels.
OFFICIAL RULES FOR CUB SCOUT and BROWNIE/GIRL SCOUT DIVISIONS:
1. To be permitted to race in the 2006 State Championship, a Cub Scout and Brownie is required to wear his Class A uniform shirt. Every racer must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times.
2. To be eligible to race in the State Championship, each Cub Scout must have participated in his Den and/or Pack's most recent Pinewood Derby.
3. Cub Scouts are expected to build a new car each year. Cars used for the Scout's local Den or Pack Derby held prior to the State Championship are permissible.
4. All cars in the Cub Scout, Brownie/Girl Scout and Bring-A-Buddy Divisions must conform to the inspection standards listed herein to be allowed to race. The decisions of the Race Judge will be considered final.
5. The body of each car must be made of wood.
6. The overall width of each car body, including wheels shall not exceed three inches.
7. The overall length of each car body shall not exceed seven inches. Wheels may be extended but cannot extend beyond the car body.
8. The height of each car will not exceed three inches.
9. It is strongly recommended that a car have a track clearance of a minimum of 3/8 inches. Weights placed on the bottom of a car may hinder the car's ability to run on the track.
10. The weight of each car shall not exceed 142 grams. The scales at Registration are the official scales for each track. If a car is overweight, the racer must reduce the weight to comply with the rule. No weights may be added during the Registration and check-in inspection process.
11. Car detailing is permitted as long as the detailing does not exceed the weight, height, length or width of the car. Detailing must be in good taste.
12. Every car must have a solid front end. Sloped fronts are not permissible. Slopes, notches, channels and points on the front of the car that would give a racer an advantage at the starting line are prohibited.
13. Graphite and other lubricants are permissible but are not permitted to be applied in the Meadowbrook Mall before or during the race.
14. No loose materials are permissible on any car.
15. Wheels must be Official BSA-approved wheels. Wheels may not be altered or modified in any way by drilling holes on or through any part of the wheel. Tread area must be flat and must not be narrowed. Outside face of the wheel AND THE INSIDE OF THE WHEEL must not be shaved, lathed, rounded, drilled or altered in any way. BSA must be visible on the outside of every wheel. Tapering is not permitted. Wheels may be smoothed by polishing in order to improve surface imperfections. Sidewalls cannot be shaved.
16. All FOUR wheels must sit flat on surface at the same time. No hubcaps are permissible.
17. Axles must be BSA-approved. Washers and bushings are prohibited.
18. The car must not ride on or use any type of spring. The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices.
19. Each and every car must pass an inspection by the Judges at the appropriate track where the Cub Scout will race. Adjustments can be made in an area designated by the Judges with tools provided by the Judges. No tool kits, boxes, backpacks, camera cases or purses are permitted inside the track area. Adjustments can only be made by the Scout with help from his parent and/or his Scout Leader. The decisions of the Judges will be final. The Judges may disqualify any car that does not comply with the rules herein.
20. After inspection and registration, only the Cub Scout may handle his own car. No boxes or containers are permitted inside the track area. Parents are not permitted inside the track area.
21. A Scout is permitted to leave the track area at any time as long as he does so in the company of his parent(s) or Scout Leader.
22. The Cub Scout must be present to race his own car. No substitutions.
23. In the case of a tie, the racers will run again in the same lanes.
24. A racer may be disqualified for touching or tampering with another car.
25. If a car loses a part twice during the Championship Race, the racer will be disqualified. If a racer loses a part once, then the racer, with the help of the Track Judge and/or his Parent or Scout Leader, may work on his car.
26. A racer will be disqualified if his car touches another car twice during his Championship Race.
Rules for All Non-Cub Scout (Anything Goes) Divisions:
Mom's & Sisters, Dad's and Boy Scout Divisions
Non-Cub Scout Divisions must only comply with the BSA-approved height, length and width requirements.
The term "Anything Goes" is defined as: Any number of wheels, any type of wheels, any type of axle, any amount of weight and any body style.
The use of any starting device, CO2, battery operated motors, flammable liquids and the use of Mercury is prohibited. Graphite is permissible as long as graphite is not applied inside the Meadowbrook Mall.

Official Race t-shirts for non-scout Division racers are available on a first-come first served basis at the conclusion of all races.
Rule Changes or Additions:
The State Derby Planning Committee reserves the right to alter or add any additional rule(s) prior to the start of any race if that rule addresses an issue important to providing a fair opportunity for all racers.
